Description: | Granite coast scenery at Greeb Zawn, Land's End. The view affords a good example of sea erosion on jointed granite. From the flat, 200 ft. platform, seen on the left, the land falls with increasing steepness to the top of the vertical cliffs. Erosion along joint planes has resulted in the formation of caves. The dark 'wall' across the foreground is a dyke of fine-grained granite that has offered resistance to erosion. The embayment in the cliff just above the dyke, to the right, is an incipient zawn. Weathering and the action of the sea has played a significant role in forming the landscape of the area. After the hot granites were emplaced they cooled forming a network of joints. After considerable erosion the granites are now exposed to the air and preferential weathering by action of the rain, frost and vegetation along the joints has formed the current appearance. |
