Description: | Island of Iona and village, from the south-west, Argyllshire. The village, in the left and centre distance, is built on the 6.4 m. (25 ft.) raised beach plain. Note that this provides one of the few areas of arable land on the island. The land on the right distance and the far horizon is part of the island of Mull. The Sound of Iona is the intervening stretch of sea. Most of the island is composed of Lewisian basement gneiss (Pre-Cambrian). Marble was extensively quarried on Iona at one time. |
