Description: | Looking east at Efford Ditch (lower part of cliff), 3/4 mile W. 25 degrees S. of Bude. Typical lithological units of the Lower Westphalian Bude Sandstones Group showing thick black shales (lower left corner), thick sandstone units (lower right corner) and alternating siltstone-sandstone sequence displaying lenticular developments of the more argillaceous members. The main fold structures show axes swinging from a near horizontal attitude to about 35 degrees, north above a low-angled fracture dipping and downthrowing south. Beneath the fracture drag folding occurs with axes subparallel to the fault plane. Steeper south-dipping normal faulting and minor drag folds occur near the centre and top left of the photograph. Bude Sandstones are now known as Bude Formation. Towards the end of the Carboniferous the immensely thick sediments of the Devonian - Carboniferous sea were folded along east - west lines by movements of the Armorican orogeny. Forces were sufficient to produce overfolding, faulting and thrusting and the development of slaty cleavages. This was followed by the intrusion of the granite batholith and the six cupolas and consequent metamorphism. |
