Description: Bowers Quarry, Portland. Looking E. Channeller' at work in Portland Stone Quarry. As a rule quarrying at Portland is carried on from joint to joint: occasionally, owing to such conditions as property boundaries, a straight cut has to be made. This is done with a channeller, or steam chisel, which cuts to a depth of about 4 ft.
