Caption: | Photomicrograph of sandstone from Deepdale, Barnard Castle, County Durham, England |
Description: | The image is a photomicrograph of part of a thin section of Catcastle sandstone showing the grain structure of the rock. The specimen is of Carboniferous age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number MC 4754. The sample is a quartz-rich sandstone which is relatively highly compacted with little porosity. The compaction is obvious as the individual sand grains are in tight contact. Much of the porosity in the rock has been caused by secondary dissolution of the framework grains as a result of corrosive fluids passing through the rock. Catcastle stone is quarried from the famous Millstone Grit in northern England. It has been used in Scotland for the new Sheriff Court House in Edinburgh (1997) and the restoration of the Great Hall at Stirling Castle (completed in 2000). |
