Description: | Oblique aerial view of Sandside Head, Caithness. View to the south. The strata in Sandside Bay and the surrounding area dips gently (between 10 and 15 degrees) to the north-west and north-north-west. The rocks, in the Latheron Subgroup of the Upper Caithness Flagstone Group in the Middle Old Red Sandstone, consist of successive uniform beds of lacustrine shale, siltstones and fine-grained sandstone. The wave-cut platform/skerries of Sandside Bay contain 'fish beds' which trend towards the east-north-east, ie. parallel to the strike of dip. From Sandside Bay westwards, the height of the cliffs steadily increases to 40 metres with two geos present on either side of Sandside Head, created by exploitation of vertical joints and fractures in the flagstones. South-south-west of the village of Reay the outlier of Beinn Ratha can be seen; it is composed of basal breccia and conglomerate of the Lower Old Red Sandstone and lies on top of Moine psammites and semipelites along with pre-Caledonian sodic granite. |
