Description: | The image is a photomicrograph of a diorite rock, showing the two main mineral components, amphibole and plagioclase feldspar. The amphibole has a yellow-green colour and shows a strong cleavage which is generally parallel to the long axes of the crystals. The plagioclase forms the pale-coloured grains. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number ED 227. Light: PPL, Magnification x 10. Light: PPL, Magnification x 10. The thin section was taken from a sample of a diorite which has intruded into a larger quartz-diorite igneous rock. The Criffel igneous complex is Devonian in age and consists of three granodiorites with associated quartz-diorite rocks intruded into a Silurian host rock. It covers an elevated tract of land 27 km. by c. 11 km. stretching from the River Nith to Bengairn. A range of Devonian intrusions occurs in southern Scotland though the most important ones are the Criffel, Loch Doon and Cairnsmore of Fleet granitic masses. |
