Caption: Rock specimen of laminated siltstone. South-east coast of Rum, Argyllshire.
Description: The sample is a fine-grained grey-green siltstone with thin interbands of darker shale, showing ripple-laminated structure. The rock has been sheared so that the lamination structures are deformed and attenuated. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 4970. Ripple marks such as these are a form of cross-bedding. Torridonian strata covers large tracts of land in Skye and Rum. In Rum a group of shales 1400 feet thick is regarded as corresponding to part of the Diabaig Group, the lower of the two main groups of Torridonian rocks and 9000 feet of overlying arkoses which are believed to represent part at least of the Applecross grits, the upper group. The Torridonian rocks represent an assemblage of terrestrial sedimentary rocks laid down under fluviatile and or more rarely shallow lacustrine conditions.
