Caption: Rock specimen of porphyritic basalt. One-third of a mile south of triangulation point at Cruach Choireadail, south-west of a little loch, Argyllshire, Scotland.
Description: The sample is a hard crystalline basic igneous rock containing abundant large crystals of plagioclase feldspar. The rock has a greenish tinge, suggesting it may have undergone some hydrothermal alteration. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC4234. The sample is from near the central complex of the Mull Tertiary intrusion, from an area dominated by sheeted basic dykes, augite diorites and olivine gabbros. The Mull igneous complex was one of a number of centres of volcanic activity in western Scotland in Tertiary times. Other areas of major volcanism were Skye, Rum, Eigg, Ardnamurchan and Arran.
