Caption: Rock specimen of mudstone. Burn near Potburn, head of River Ettrick, Dumfriesshire, Scotland.
Description: The sample is a uniform grey-coloured mudstone. It is fine-grained and shows no sedimentary structures. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC3652. The term mudstone is used to describe rocks which are similar to shales, but which lack the presence of planar bedding or fissility. Mudstones belong to the group of argillaceous rock, i.e. those with an average grain size less than 1/16 of a millimetre. Other argillaceous rocks are clays, shales, siltstones and marls. The mudstones rest on Monograptus Spinigerus band, Silurian age.
