Caption: | Bay quarry. |
Description: | A small inlet on the north side of Munlochy Bay. This is a disused quarry in Old Red Sandstone, which was originally worked for stone to build Fort George on the south side of the Moray Firth. The stone was shipped out from a small jetty (still in evidence). Stone has probably not been worked from this site for approximately 150 years. The exposed face is approximately 20m and 50m long, although well overgrown. There are a wide range of grain sizes in this rock from fine silt to coarse conglomerate. Recognisable fragments in the conglomerate include pink granite and gneiss. It is well bedded in parts, and has some green reduced areas. |
