Description: | Orthograptus calcaratus acutus, a graptolite from the gracilis Biozone (Lower Caradoc) of the Ordovician Southern Uplands Terrane. British Geological Survey Biostratigraphy Collection number GSE 15114. A member of the Diplograptidae Family, it is a scandent biserial form with straight stipes. The biostratigraphy of the Lower Palaeozoic rocks in the Carrick - Loch Doon area relies almost exclusively on graptolites mostly obtained from the elongate inliers of the Moffat Shale Group. On death, graptolites such as Orthograptus that were common in the Ordovician and Silurian seas fell to the sea floor and became entombed in the sea floor muds, and if conditions were right they would be preserved as fossils as we find them today. Most appear as shiny markings on rock surfaces and it is only rarely that the detailed structure of graptolites is preserved in this process.
