Description: | Parakidograptus acuminatus is a Silurian graptolite from the acuminatus Biozone. British Geological Survey Biostratigraphy Collection number GSE 14931. A scandent biserial form with fine thread-like central virgula that protrudes some distance beyond the stipes. It is thought it may have been used for attachment when juveniles, for strengthening, or to attach to a flotation device or vane. Graptolites lived between the Cambrian and Carboniferous periods though their greatest growth was in the Ordovician. This was followed by near extinction during a late Ordovician glaciation, however they recovered and thrived in the Silurian. Figd.Geology of the Rhins of Galloway sheet 1 and 3, fig 8o. |
