Caption: | A fossil specimen of Monograptus fimbriatus Nicholson. A fossil graptolite. (Graptolithina.) Dobb's Linn, Moffat, Dumfriesshire, Scotland. |
Description: | Monograptus is characterized by a rhabdosome with a single stipe which could be straight or curved. It is uniserial (stipes consisting of a single series of thecae) and scandent (stipes grow upwards from the sicula with the thecae growing outwards). British Geological Survey Biostratigraphy Collection number GSE 2628. Green Spot. This specimen of Monograptus fimbriatus was found at Dobb's Linn in the Birkhill Shales. Graptolites have been around since the Cambrian Period when branched forms were very common. In the later Ordovician Period branched graptolites such as Didymograptus were common. By the Silurian the simple unbranched forms such as Monograptus were characteristic of the period. Figd. G.L. Elles & E.M.R. Wood, `Brit. Graptolites` Mon. Pal. Soc. 1913, pl. 48, figs. 4b, 4d. |
