Caption: A fossil specimen of Mariopteris nervosa Brongniart. A fossil plant. (Plantae.) Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland.
Description: A pteridosperm (seed fern) somewhat like Sphenopteris in form, i.e. with fern-like fronds. It also has features of the Pecopteris type ie. fern-like frond with bluntly rounded leaflets attached to the axis by their whole base. British Geological Survey Biostratigraphy Collection number GSE 4733. Seed ferns evolved from ferns at the beginning of the Carboniferous. They differ from true ferns in having seed-bearing structures on their leaves. The Pteridosperms belong to the Gymnosperms, woody plants whose seeds are not held in fruits and have annual growths of secondary wood, including seed ferns, cycads, ginkgos and conifers. This specimen is from the Upper Carboniferous.
