Description: | Polymorphites is an ammonite with an evolute shell and with strong ribbing. It belongs to the Family Polymorpitidae. It is from the Lower Jurassic, Lower Lias ibex zone and was found at Prison Brae, Tobermory, Isle of Mull. British Geological Survey Biostratigraphy Collection number GSE 3432. In the Inner Hebrides the Jurassic and other mesozoic rocks outcrop around the margins of the Tertiary plateau basalt lavas under cover of which they have been protected from erosion. The Lower Lias is a predominantly marine sequence and consists of the lower Broadford Beds with strongly developed limestones on Mull and the upper Pabba Shales which are mostly micaceous sandy shales up to 400 feet thick. Both beds have yielded many fossils. |
