Description: | The statue in front of the original Register House is a bronze statue of the 'Iron Duke', the Duke of Wellington, on horseback. It was made by Sir John Steell, and sits on a vast monolithic plinth of red granite from Peterhead or Ross of Mull. The statue faces directly across the length of the North Bridge, and also dominates the view of Register House, the masterpiece of the Scottish architect Robert Adam, from the bridge. It is said that many residents objected to the presence of the Duke of Wellington, a figure more associated with England than Scotland, in front of one of the most impressive buildings in Scotland's capital city. |
