Description: | Coastal cliff, 1200 m. S. of Penarth Pier. Penarth Group in cliff at Seven Sisters Bay, Penarth. Strata exposed in cliff: Lower Lias. 1) 'Ostrea beds', flat-bedded limestones with thin shales. Paper shale horizon at base. Penarth Group (Triassic) Lilstock Formation: 2) 'Watchet Beds', grey calcareous siltstone and mudstone. 3) 'Langport Beds', three thin beds of pale grey very fine-grained limestone. 4) 'Cotham Beds', orange weathering calcareous siltstone and sandstone - filling cracks in pale grey mudstone below. Westbury Formation: 5) Black shales with Rhaetavicula contorta thin beds of nodular calcareous mudstone and pyritiferous sandstone can be seen in the photograph. Mercia Mudstone Group: Tea Green Marl: 6) Unevenly bedded grey limestone. Hollows in upper surface infilled with quartz pebbles and fish fragments (Rhaetic Bone Bed). Height of cliff 15 m. |
