Description: | Broadway Pit, Newton Abbot. Looking NW. Bovey Tracey ball clays. To the east of the open pit (A8182) the seam of clay 5 ft. thick to 90 ft. below surface and is worked by a small shaft with one compartment for ladder-way and pump rods and another for hoisting. The top of the ladder is seen. The wooden bucket is hoisted by crane and the clay dumped into a truck (below bucket) and taken up the ramp (in background) to the stock-pile. The 'bell crank' operating the pump is on the left of the shaft. |
