Description: | N. side of A40 in Clytha road-cutting, E. of Llanvihangel Gobion. Middle Llangibby Beds (Ludlow Series), Clytha. Interbedded fine-grained sandstones, rubbly bioturbated siltstones and silty mudstones of the Middle Llangibby Beds (Whitecliffian). The beds are decalcified, and slightly nodular when weathered. Small scour structures to the right of the hammer head, and parallel and cross-lamination in the silty sandstones, together with shallow-water brachiopods in basal storm layers indicate a high-energy environment on a shallow shelf sea. The large-scale low-angle channel surfaces near the hammer have been compared to sand waves in the present day North Sea. Large burrowing bivalves representing the indigenous fauna are more common in the bioturbated silty mudstones. The fauna is a residual one with fewer species than the prolific fauna of earlier Ludlow rocks. The hammer shaft is 30 cm. long. |
