Description: | N. side of A40 in Clytha road-cutting, E. of Llanvihangel Gobion. Middle Llangibby Beds (Silurian), Usk Inlier. Easterly-dipping, well-bedded Middle Llangibby Beds (Whitecliffian, uppermost Ludlow in age) in the Clytha road-cutting at the northern end of the Usk Inlier. The beds have a nodular weathered appearance and consist of decalcified silty sandstones, siltstones and silty mudstones, which commonly form a scarp slope (as at Clytha). Brachiopods are plentiful in storm layers concentrated at the base of the coarser beds and large burrowing bivalves represent the indigenous fauna preserved in the softer silty mudstones. The beds are typical of the highest Ludlow rocks in the Welsh Borderland. |
