Caption: | Opencast coal, sharp folding in New Red Sandstone and Coal Measures, Redborough Farm opencast site, Ashby de la Zouch, Leicestershire. |
Description: | Looking south-east, Redborough Farm opencast site, Leicestershire Coalfield, 1 m. south-east of Packington Church, Ashby de la Zouch. Sharp folding in New Red Sandstone and Coal Measures. To the right of the photograph the lower dark band is Nether Lount Coal (5 ft. thick); above it are two light-coloured bands of seat clay containing a thin coal. The upper dark band is the lower portion of the Middle Lount Coal. The measures above are New Red Sandstone. Between the cap of the dragline and its bucket the coals and measures are sharply folded into an east-north-east anticline, the crest of which is broken. The New Red Sandstone is of Triassic age and represents a complete change in palaeoenvironment from Carboniferous Coal Measures forests and swamps to a semi-arid to arid environment. |
