Description: | Barnfield Pit, Swanscombe. Looking E. Boyn Hill or 100 foot terrace deposits of the Thames. At the base the Lower Gravel; in the centre the Lower Loam is exposed overlain by the Middle Gravel with a trace of the current-bedded sand. In the Lower Gravel only large flakes and cores of Clactonian technique, probably Chellean culture: in the Middle Gravel early Acheulean hand axes and in the sand later Acheulean forms occur in abundance. The fauna of the Lower Gravel includes Elephas antiquus; Rhonceros sp. and Hippopotamus sp. locally in abundance. |
