Description: The comparatively soft glauconitic and siliceous sandstones of the Upper Greensand, commonly termed the Reigate Stone, were once mined extensively in the area for building stone for use in London. A number of names have commonly been used to describe these mineralogically very distinctive sandstones - Malmstone, Hearthstone, Firestone. Entrance to an old hearthstone mine in the Upper Greensand. The stratum above the timbers is a hard bed which forms a good roof. Above it lies fine-grained glauconitic micaceous sand, and below, the greenish-white soft, siliceous sandstone once worked for hearthstone. Many such former mine entrances survive demonstrating the former extent of the industry in the area. The shortage of high quality, durable building stones in the London area meant that the Upper Greensand succession was once of considerable importance as a local source of building stone. Known generically as Reigate Stone these compartively weak sandstones have been found in many of London's medieval buildings such as the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey and Windsor Castle.
