Description: Barnard's Pit, 1/2 m. SW of Reigate Church. Looking NE. Drift on the summit of the Lower Greensand escarpment. A sand-pit in the Hythe Beds on the summit of the Lower Greensand escarpment, showing a capping of drift. The drift is 6 to 8 ft. thick and consists of buff loam, bedded in places with greenish streaks of glauconitic sand and containing scattered angular pieces of ironstone and both resinous and spongy chert. The gulley on the right of the picture is formed by rain draining from the cleared surface of the sand. See also No. A4414.
