Description: | Burlington Slate Limited, Kirkby in Furness, Cumbria. Syndepositional deformation in the Tilberthwaite Formation. This cut slab of volcaniclastic rocks from Broughton Moor Quarry [SD 253 945] shows many features of the Tilberthwaite Formation. At the base parallel laminated, fine-grained sandstones; the top being defined by an erosion surface. Laminated mudstones and siltstone overlie the erosion surface and are succeeded by coarse-grained, weakly-bedded sandstone. Rapid loading of the mudstone and the siltstone by the sandstones produced the diapir and flame structures in the mudstone. Burlington Slate Limited are thanked for their assistance in obtaining this photograph. |
