Description: Harter Fell, 350 m. NW of summit. Nodular ignimbrite: Little Stand Tuff Birker Fell Formation (Borrowdale Volcanic Group). A very distinctive rhyolitic welded ignimbrite containing abundant siliceous nodules (lithophysae) extends from Yoadcastle [SD 1595] to Cold Pike [NY2603], a distance of about 13 km. It forms an important marker horizon that aids stratigraphic correlation within the thick andesite pile. The roughly spherical nodules have an outer zone of welded tuff and a central, irregular, quartz-filled cavity.
