Description: | Fox Bield, 1.2 km. NE of Birkerthwaite, Ulpha (Burker) Fell. Birker Fell Formation (Borrowdale Volcanic Group). Great Whinscale and Crook Crag with prominent benches dipping shallowly from left to right, mark boundaries of lava flows and interbedded tuff. Great Whinscale (centre skyline) is the outcrop of a prominent white weathered dacite flow that extends from near Devoke Water to Little Stand (NY 24 03). This, and the underlying nodular and bedded tuff, constitute the Tongue House Member, an important stratigraphic marker unit within the predominantly basalt and andesite lava sequence of the Birker Fell Formation. |
