Caption: Oblique aerial view of the Loch Laidon linear feature, looking north-east from Loch Ba, Perthshire.
Description: The distinctive linear feature highlighted by the shape of Loch Laidon is caused by the Ericht-Laidon Fault. It is a brittle fault that developed towards the end and after the Caledonian Orogeny. It belongs to one of a group of prominent faults with a north-easterly trend, subparallel to the Great Glen. On the basis of their trend, and the fact that several show a sinistral sense of movement they have been genetically linked to the Great Glen Fault and so they are thought to have a similar age and history of movement. The last significant movement on this fault took place at the end of the Caledonian Orogeny as evidence indicates that the fault displaced the post-tectonic Moor of Rannoch Granite. It is thought the fault fissures would have played a major part as a pathway for the intrusion. The area is underlain by the post-tectonic (Caledonian Orogeny) Moor of Rannoch Granite which is traversed by the Ericht-Laidon fault. The moor is a wilderness of bog, lochs, boulder-strewn hillocks and low hills.
