Description: | Oblique aerial view of Eelicar Rock, Cleaver Rock, St. Abb's Head, Berwickshire. The headland is composed of Lower Devonian andesite lavas while beyond is the Fast Castle coast. The lighthouse sits on a 40-50 metre thick lava flow. Small faults are responsible for the alignment of the gullies and stacks such as Cleaver Rock. Marine erosion has led to preferential erosion along these faults. In the distance the cliffs of the Fast Castle coast are formed of older Silurian rocks, a sequence of greywackes, siltstones and mudstones, hundreds of feet thick and heavily folded. The rocks of the foreground and the Fast Castle coast are separated by the north-west - south-east trending St. Abb's Head Fault which outcrops in Pettico Wick. |
