Description: | Edinburgh Castle Rock and Arthur's Seat, looking north from Hillend, Lothian Region. The City of Edinburgh has many hills composed of volcanic rocks. Both the Castle Rock (in the left distance) and Arthur's Seat (centre distance) are basalt plugs of Lower Carboniferous age. Salisbury Craigs, a teschenitic dolerite sill of the same age, forms the sub-horizontal slab to the left of Arthur's Seat. The gorse-covered hills in the middle distance, between the photographer and Arthur's Seat, are the Blackford Hills of Lower Devonian andesite, similar to the rock forming the hill where the photographer is standing. |
