Description: | Ronas Hill, as seen from Stugger Hill, 1 km. south of Urafirth, Shetland Isles. This, the highest hill in Shetland, is composed of granite of the Northmaven Plutonic Complex. The head of Ura Firth is in the foreground. The Ronas Hill Granite is the main granitic body of North Roe. The 'granite' is in fact a deep red leucocratic (containing light-coloured minerals) granophyre (i.e. with a graphic texture, when seen on a flat surface the mineral grains show a regular interlocking pattern). Note the ayre at the head of the bay with the standing water behind. |
