Description: | The Neap, 3 km. west-north-west of Hillswick, Shetland mainland looking to the south-east, Shetland Isles. Cliffs of granite of the Northmaven Plutonic Complex in the foreground: The Drongs (granite stacks) in the background. A natural progession of coastal erosion after the development of headlands, is for the sides of the headlands themselves to erode, eventually forming caves which break through to form a natural arch. With continuing erosion the arch collapses leaving a detached portion of the headland as an isolated sea stack. |
