Description: | St. Ninian's Isle from Ward of Scousburgh, Shetland Isles. A tombolo. St. Ninian's Isle is linked to the mainland by a sandy tombolo, known locally as an 'ayre'. Waves approaching from the Atlantic Ocean are refracted around the north and south sides of the island. To the east of the island waves approaching by one of the routes face those approaching by the other and because the water is shallow they break, building the sediment on the sea bed into a tombolo. It is thought that this tombolo was constructed from both sides. The tombolo is a depositional feature indicative of Shetland being an area of submergence. Other features of submergence are the drowned valleys or voes. |
