Description: | Looking east-south-east from 1.6 km. east of Inverpolly Lodge, Cul Mor, Ross & Cromarty. Torridonian sandstone mountain capped by quartzite of Cambrian age resting on the Lewisian gneiss seen in the foreground. In late Precambrian times (1000-750 Ma) an undulating eroded land surface of much older Lewisian gneiss was covered by thick accumulations of terrestrial sedimentary rocks laid down mostly by a series of rivers flowing from the north-west. These rocks are called the Torridonian sandstone. The Torridonian strata and basement gneisses were tilted westwards and planated prior to the deposition of the lower Cambrian quartzites. Later post-Cambrian earth movements have tilted all rocks as much as 20 degrees to the east with the Torridonian rocks more or less recovering their original horizontal disposition. |
