Caption: | View from near Newton of Fintry of the south-west face of the Fintry Hills, Stirlingshire. |
Description: | The irregular mass of unusually fresh Jedburgh type basalt of the Dun occurs abruptly within the tuffs, volcanic detritus and highly decomposed lavas of the Slackgun Interbasaltic Beds. Vertical columnar joining with perfect hexagonal prisms is common on the west face. The Fintry Hills are part of the Clyde Plateau Lavas, a thick continuous sequence of lavas that occurs on the north, west and south of Glasgow. Escarpment of basalt lavas of Carboniferous Calciferous Sandstone Measures age, showing trap features and the plug-like basalt intrusion of the Dun seen on left immediately above the wood. The alluvial flat of River Endrick in foreground. |
