Description: Lavas under Skipper's Bridge on the River Esk, A7 road about 1 km. south of Langholm, Dumfries and Galloway. Looking upstream. Birrenswark Lavas, the basal unit of the Carboniferous in the Langholm area, forming the foundations for Skipper's Bridge, Langholm. The lavas are overlain by the Whita Sandstone, part of the Border Group. Note the additional arches on each side of the main arch, designed to avoid the undue build up of flood water during a spate, and also to allow animal stock to pass under the bridge.
