Description: | Ayres of Swinister', Dales Voe, looking north-east from south of Rugg, Mainland, Shetland Isles. General view of ayre. Along many parts of the coast of Shetland one finds long narrow spits of shingle or of sand which are known locally as 'ayres'. Most of these are formed across a shallow bay or across a voe, usually near its landward end, cutting off, either partly or completely, a sheet of water from the sea. The South Ayre at Dales Voe is a double tombolo joining the island of Fora Ness to the Mainland (foreground). |
