Description: | View of the Sanquhar-Kirkconnel Coalfield, Dumfries and Galloway. Looking east down the Nith Valley with, on the right, a gentle dip-slope of Carboniferous rocks unconformable upon Ordovician. To the left, Carboniferous rocks are downfaulted against Ordovician greywackes forming a scarp feature. The Sanquhar coalfield is a classic half-graben, common in the Southern Uplands, in which the basin subsided against a fault along only one side. The other margin operated like a hinge, with the whole basin being let down rather like a trap door. In this case, the Sanquhar Fault bounds the coalfield to the north-east, whereas the other margins are merely unconformable on Ordovician. |
