Description: | View looking north-east towards Murray's Monument on the Newton Stewart - New Galloway Road (A712), Kirkudbrightshire. Northern margin of the Cairnsmore of Fleet granite. Typical view of the topography of the metamorphic rocks associated with the Cairnsmore of Fleet granite mass. The rocks on the left (north of the road) are hornfelsed greywackes while the Cairnsmore of Fleet granite pluton forms the high ground on the right. The Palnure Burn is in the centre-right ground. Much of this area is now heavily forested. The Cairnsmore of Fleet pluton is more typical of Southern Uplands granites (unlike the Loch Doon pluton) in that it stands up as high ground above the surrounding country rocks. The latter are nevertheless hornfelsed (baked) for some distance (c.1 km.) from the contact and are more resistant to erosion than the un-metamorphosed greywackes. |
