Description: View from summit of The Merrick, Kirkudbrightshire. Looking north-east. Looking north-east over Loch Doon granite pluton with Loch Doon in the distance. The ridge in the middle distance is Hoodens Hill and Lump of The Eglin with the northern slopes of Mullwharchar towards the right. The Eglin Lane can be seen on the left, snaking along towards Loch Doon. The ridge on the skyline consists of hard hornfelsed greywacke (Coran of Portmark, Bow, Meaul). The hornfelsed greywackes which surround the Loch Doon pluton are generally more resistant to erosion than most of the plutonic rocks. The granodiorite, which forms the bulk of the pluton, tends to form lower ground with lochs and streams (Eglin Lane). However, the central core of true granite is harder and stands up as a ridge (Mullwharchar, Hoodens Hill etc.).
