Description: | Loch Enoch, looking eastwards from the summit of The Merrick, Kirkudbrightshire. Rock basin formed by glacier action. Glacial rock basin excavated in the granodiorite of the Loch Doon pluton. Rather surprisingly, the granodiorite is more easily eroded than the true granite which forms the central ridge in the pluton (seen in the background) and therefore underlies almost all the small lochs within the boundary of the pluton. The Loch Doon granite pluton is of early Devonian age and intrudes mainly Ordovician greywackes of the Leadhills Supergroup. It has an 'hour-glass' shape in plan and includes several different rock types ranging from granite to diorite. |
