Description: Waterfall of 'Grey Mare's Tail', 2.0 km. south-west of Birkhill Cottage, Dumfries and Galloway. Typical 'hanging valley' on the north wall of the main Moffat Valley. The spectacular Grey Mare's Tail is formed where the Tail Burn, draining Loch Skene, cascades from its plateau level down into the valley of the Moffat Water. The gorge is cut in greywackes and shales of Silurian age. Many of the topographical features of the Moffat area are either the direct result of, or were enhanced by, glacial action. The Moffat Valley is occupied by a linear shatter belt which has been gouged out and over-deepened by major glaciers. In these circumstances, the tributary streams are generally not as deeply eroded and are therefore preserved as 'hanging valleys' along the margins of the main valley.
