Description: | Neidpath Castle, 1.6 km. west of Peebles, Peeblesshire. Looking east along a postglacial gorge cut in Silurian greywacke sandstones of the Gala Group. The narrow gorge is now occupied by the River Tweed. Neidpath Castle is a fortified house of a type once common in the Scottish Borders. It occupies a strong position on a bend in the river and is a reminder of those more troubled times when the region was characterized by feuds between the great families on both sides of the border. The Southern Uplands had its own ice-cap which completely covered the region during the peak of the Devensian glaciation. When the glaciers finally receded, enhanced flows of drainage water cut many rock gorges such as this. |
