Description: | Cliffs of lava on shore south of Dunure Castle, Dunure, Ayrshire. Looking north. Lowest raised beach, about 3 m. (10 ft.) above sea level (centre of photograph), cut in lavas of Devonian (Lower Old Red Sandstone) age. Dunure Castle on the left, was at one time a stronghold of the Kennedys, a powerful local family. The Devonian lavas of the coast of Carrick (between the Heads of Ayr and Turnberry) are well-known for their agates (Scotch Pebbles). These represent original cavities (gas bubbles, etc.) in the rock which were subsequently infilled by concentrically banded chalcedony deposited from circulating ground waters. |
