| Description: | Columnar basalt in volcanic vent, Campsie Hills, Stirlingshire. Columnar basalt, part of the infilling material of one of the string of volcanic vents in the Campsie Hills which fed the lavas of the Clyde Plateau Volcanic Formation north of Glasgow. Scotland was quite active volcanically during the early Carboniferous period, with huge volumes of basalt lava erupted in the Clyde Plateau Volcanic Formation. There were also some subsidiary tuffs and volcaniclastic sedimentary rocks, all of sub-aerial origin. Numerous contemporary basic and intermediate intrusions such as dykes, sills and plugs pierce the older sedimentary rocks and fed the lavas to the surface. |
