| Description: | Quinag, 8.9 km. north-west of Inchnadamph, looking west, Sutherland. A mountain of Torridonian sandstone capped by Cambrian Basal Quartzite and resting on an uneven surface of Lewisian gneiss. In late Precambrian times c. 1000-750 Ma. the eroded land surface of Lewisian gneiss of the North-West Highlands was covered by a thick accumulation of sediments which in the Caledonian Foreland have never been deformed or regionally metamorphosed. These Torridonian rocks are part of those thick accumulations. It might be that they are only the last of several cycles of deposition and erosion since the gneisses formed the land surface. The Torridonian was deposited on an undulating surface and in the region of Quinag it had high relief, the Torridonian - Lewisian boundary is a major unconformity. The overlying Cambrian quartize is in turn unconformable on the Torridonian. |
