Description: | Shore at Kintradwell, 4.0 km. north of Brora, Sutherland. The Jurassic Helmsdale Boulder Bed. Angular blocks of Middle Old Red Sandstone resting on and partly embedded in contorted Jurassic mudstone. At the time of deposition of the boulder bed there was an active fault scarp of gently dipping Middle Old Red Sandstone with a very shallow water cover. Due to the instability of the slope (and possible seismic activity along the fault) falls of large masses of Middle Old Red Sandstone would occur down the scarp and particularly concentrated in gullies, The debris would fall on the deeper water fine sediments, now mudstones and shales creating disruption of the bedding as in the photograph. |
