| Description: | 3.2 km. south of Portgower, 3.2 km. south-west of Helmsdale, Sutherland. The Jurassic Helmsdale Boulder Bed. Jurassic boulder bed made up of large blocks of Middle Old Red Sandstone lying at all angles. A geologist can be seen standing on the rocks. These spectacular rocks, specifically of Kimmeridgian age, were formed in the Jurassic seas and controlled by the then active Helmsdale Fault. The fault created a submarine scarp thought to be at least c. 30 m. high with a deep water submarine slope environment to the south-east of the fault and a shallow water shelf environment on the north-west side, the rocks of the scarp being gently dipping Middle Old Red Sandstone breccias. Derived from the top of the scarp and flowing down gullies, large accumulations of rock-fall-breccias formed at the foot of a submarine escarpment to create what is now the boulder bed. |
