Caption: Girston, 3.2 km. south of Wick, Caithness.
Description: The fault would have acted as a line of weakness along which marine erosion would have followed, so leaving the large stack isolated from the cliffs. The continuation of the land profile from cliff to stack is clearly seen. Note the sea cliff on the left and the natural arch on the left-hand end of the stack. Coastal scene showing the The Girston Fault throwing nearly horizontal Hillhead Red Bed Subgroup rocks of the Girston Stack (right) against more steeply inclined to the north-west Helman Head Formation on the cliff, the fault runs between the two.
